Register for Preach-In on Global Warming

Interfaith Power & Light (IPL) is inviting faith leaders from across the country to give sermons and reflections on global warming the weekend of February 10-12, 2012. As the date approaches, IPL will be offering a variety of resources free of charge to those who register, including:

  • Scripture notes and sample sermons, tied to climate and care of Creation
    • Revised Common Lectionary
    • Roman Catholic Lectionary
    • Jewish Torah cycle
    • Multi-faith devotional and reflection guides
  • Bulletin inserts (Global Warming – Should I Care? How Is It a Faith Issue? What Can I Do?)
  • Activities for children and youth
  • Free film: 30-minute DVD, Preaching for the Planet, normally $15, sent free of charge

Host a Film and Discussion

In addition to sermons, or as an alternative, we are encouraging congregations to screen the film that’s included, Preaching for the Planet: Interfaith Messages on Global Warming (30 min., DVD format). Watch the short trailer.

The film includes full sermonettes from the Rev. Canon Sally Bingham, Linda Cutts (Senior Dharma Teacher), Rev. Stephen A Privett, S.J., Imam M. A. Azeez, and Rabbi Melanie Aron. This film will provide ideas to those preparing sermons, and it’s also a wonderful film for anyone to watch, as the sermonettes themselves are inspirational and educational.

Send valentines to policy makers!

Leading up to the event, participating congregations will distribute Valentine’s Day post cards to mail in to their senators, encouraging our political leaders to love their neighbors and the earth by supporting policies that protect the climate and clean air.

Clergy, if that weekend is not available, please consider another weekend in February. We hope to have congregations in every state participating. Sign up below and we will send you resources to help you prepare.

If you have past sermons of your own you are willing to share, please send them to us.

If you are clergy, we encourage you to identify a volunteer coordinator to help with this effort. This person can help your congregants learn more about the issue and handle logistics like setting up an informational table after services.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call your state Interfaith Power & Light leader or Andrée Duggan in the national office at (510) 444-4891.
