Baltimore and beyond

Nov 15, 2012 | What's New

Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light has worked over the past eight years to help hundreds of congregations in and around the nation’s capital save energy, go green, and respond to climate change. Now its outreach is extending beyond the Beltway, with noted climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe as the special guest for “A Celebration of Religious Environmental Action in Baltimore.” The event is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, November 17, at Notre Dame of Maryland University, 4701 North Charles Street, Baltimore.

Join people from across Baltimore’s diverse religious communities for an evening of fellowship and a renewing of a shared commitment to care for the environment. Learn how Baltimore faith communities are already striving to care for Creation, and celebrate Interfaith Power & Light’s planned expansion to engage all of Maryland’s faith communities in this good work!

Keynote speaker Dr. Katharine Hayhoe is a climate scientist at Texas Tech University and an expert reviewer for the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. She is the author (with her husband, evangelical Christian pastor Andrew Farley) of Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions, and she frequently speaks to religious communities about the moral implications of climate change. She was interviewed for the recent PBS Frontline special, “Climate of Doubt.”

Saturday’s program will also feature:
* Interfaith Power & Light leaders Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb and Joelle Novey
* Angela Smith, director of the Baltimore Food & Faith Project
* Jacqueline Patterson, director of the NAACP Climate Justice Initiative
* Bishop Wolfgang Herz-Lane, Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
