Greater Washington (DC area) IPL Executive Director Joelle Novey recently addressed a web-based group sponsored by the Franciscan Action network. In her address, Novey expanded the typical understanding of environmental advocacy to include faith-based values.
“Suffice to say that our use of coal for power is connected to all of the scary consequences of a warming global climate: flooding, food scarcity, loss of species and suffering by those on the front lines in some of the world’s poorest countries,” Novey said. “When we tell this story, suddenly it becomes a lot clearer what we’re wasting when we waste electricity,” she said. “What would it look like to light and heat our parishes in ways that fully reflected Franciscan values?”
