Religious Voters Look for Moral Leadership in Veep Debate

Posted on October 7, 2020 by Nadia Ramlagan, Public News Service

RALEIGH, N.C. — As Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican incumbent Mike Pence gear up for their first debate tonight, some Christian voters say they’re overshadowed by media coverage of far-right, evangelical issues.

Reverend Dr. Oliver M. Thomas, an associate pastor in Greensboro, N.C., said national politicians continue to pander to religious voters on such issues as abortion and defunding Planned Parenthood — even though most people of faith are focused on candidates’ views on health care, the pandemic, economic inequality and racial justice.

“People are afraid that their voice will not be heard,” Thomas lamented. “People are afraid that their vote, as a way of speaking their voice, will not be heard or recognized. People also are responding to what they’ve already seen, unfortunately, from too many politicians who have not been listening.” Read more here

Episcopal bishop: Voting ‘important way for Christians’ to show values, priorities

Posted on Sep 18, 2020 by Ann Gerard Flynn, MASS Live

In an email this week to Episcopalians in his diocese, the Right Rev. Douglas Fisher, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, urged eligible voters to “ensure that they are registered and, if possible, to vote early (in person or by mail), thereby avoiding long lines at polling places.”

“The November election gives Americans a precious opportunity to support candidates and policies that will build up communities, protect public health, encourage racial and social justice, and restore the web of life,” said Fisher in an appeal that was signed by other diocesan leaders about the Nov. 3 presidential election. Read more here

Moral summons to combat climate change, help victims

Posted on Sep 14, 2020 by Rev. Katie Sexton, Rabbi Mari Chernow, Imraan Siddiqi, Arizona Republic

“As faith leaders from a variety of traditions, we join together to speak with one voice in these challenging times. Arizona is dealing with the convergence of multiple public health crises, including a record-breaking heatwave, an on-going pandemic, and the persistent and growing threat of air pollution from human activities like the production and burning of fossil fuels.

These concurrent and often related threats are affecting our communities in ways we have not seen before. It has made one thing agonizingly clear- We all need to act with more care, compassion, and urgency.

As leaders of local Christian, Jewish, and Muslim congregations in Arizona, we join together to affirm an absolute moral summons to love and care for our neighbors, especially those in communities who have been systemically marginalized, and who often bear the brunt of public health emergencies. In Politically Fraught Landscape, NC Voters Seek Moral Guidance

September 2, 2020, Nadia Ramlagan, Public News Service

RALEIGH, N.C. — A month-long virtual series organized by the North Carolina Council of Churches aims to inform voters who might feel overwhelmed in an era of misinformation and political polarization.

The Rev. Isaac Villegas, pastor of Chapel Hill Mennonite Fellowship, said Americans always have turned to faith to guide decisions about who they vote for, but faith communities now are bridging the gap to help voters understand how specific policies align with their values.

“When we cast our votes, we ask elected officials to commit to the values that we care about,” he said. “What I would like voters to pay attention to is how people running for office – what they want for society, what kind of society do they want for us, and for our people?” Read more here

Environmental Group Plants New Tree at Union Lake

Posted on Jul 23rd, 2020 by Geoff Folsom, Union Missourian Editor

Some eyebrows were raised when a local minister showed up to a tree-planting ceremony holding an ax.

But the ax, and the “chopping” motion he made toward the pin oak, turned out to be part of the sermon the Rev. Gilford Bisjak was delivering.

“I cannot tell a lie, I did not chop down this tree,” the pastor at Zion United Church of Christ said at the Wednesday, July 15, planting along the banks of City Lake in Union.

Bisjak told the dozen people gathered around the tree that there’s a place for an ax, such as in the overgrown forests in California, where the abundance of trees became a fire hazard.

“So there’s a place for an ax, but there’s a place to plant and grow trees,” he said. Read more here
