Religious groups support EPA move to curb carbon pollution

Sixteen national faith organizations representing millions of Americans have joined together in support of new safeguards to limit carbon pollution from new power plants. Collectively, they exponentially boost the more than 2.1 million comments the EPA will receive as of the public comment deadline today (Monday, June 25), the most ever received by EPA for any federal regulation.

The religious organizations sent a joint letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson, noting, “There are currently no limits on the amount of greenhouse gases power plants can emit. This rule sets a strong standard that will modernize our nation’s power plants while reducing pollution and limiting our contribution to global climate change.”

Interfaith Power & Light, a national religious response to global warming with 39 state affiliates, organized the letter with the National Council of Churches (NCC). “As people of faith, we are called to care for Creation and the most vulnerable people in our midst,” said Tyler Edgar, assistant director of NCC’s EcoJustice Program. “The strong support for these new regulations shows that Americans overwhelmingly believe that cleaner air and a stable climate can coexist with good jobs using new technology.”

“Collectively, our organizations represent millions of people of all major faith traditions,” said The Rev. Canon Sally G. Bingham, president of Interfaith Power & Light. “People of faith are very concerned about climate change as a justice issue, and we applaud this landmark step by the EPA to limit dangerous pollution from power plants.”
