A series of faith leaders stood and gave testimony at the EPA Toxics hearing in Philadelphia this week. So many faith leaders spoke that EPA hearing officer Rob Brenner stopped the proceedings to ask why? Why was this mercury issue so important to people of faith? Joy Bergey, a Methodist minister and leader in Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light, responded, “Because of the fact that it’s such clear science. This hurts babies. This hurts children. It is so clearly a question of moral responsibility.” Rabbi Daniel Schwartz, a rabbi in Scranton and another PAIPL leader, testified that “we have, in effect, subsidized the poisoning of fetuses and children.” The EPA also held hearings in Georgia and Chicago this week.
