National Preach-In on Global Warming

Clergy: Mark your calendars!

Interfaith Power and Light is inviting clergy to preach a sermon on global warming the weekend of February 12-14, 2010. As the date approaches, we will be offering lectionary resources and sample sermons (for diverse faith traditions) to clergy who have registered.

Host a Discussion

privett3
Rev. Stephen A. Privett, SJ, President, University of San Francisco

In addition to sermons, or as an alternative, we are encouraging congregations to screen films and host discussions on putting faith into action. Resources are available to those who register, including a film, fact sheets on current legislation, and discussion guides.

Send Your Senators Valentines!

Leading up to the event, participating congregations will distribute Valentine’s Day post cards to their members to mail in, encouraging Senators to love their neighbors by passing a strong climate bill.

Clergy, if that weekend is not available, please consider another weekend in February. We hope to have congregations in every state participating. Sign up below and we will send you resources to help you prepare.

Update: Sermon Resources

Practice Love by the Rev. Canon Sally Bingham (for a Protestant service)

Transfiguration Sunday Homily Outline by Father Charles Morris (for a Catholic service)

Visit the Clergy Corner for a collection of past sermons on global warming and other worship service planning aids.

We are also preparing materials for Muslim and Jewish congregations. Please let us know if you would like to receive these.

If you have past sermons of your own you are willing to share, please send them to us.

Event Materials

If you are clergy, we encourage you to identify a volunteer coordinator to help with this effort. This person can help your congregants learn more about the issue and handle logistics like setting up an informational table after services, screening the film Fighting Goliath/Covenant, and collecting post cards.

Download all materials

(To “unzip” the downloaded folder, right-click the saved file “preach-in-materials.zip” and then click Extract on the shortcut menu, or just double-click and the files should be extracted automatically.)

Or download the files individually:

Checklist for Coordinator (PDF)
Preach-In Bulletin (PDF)
Sign-up Sheet (PDF)
Global Warming and Legislative Facts Sheets (PDF)
Valentine’s Day Postcard to Senators (Color, PDF)
Valentine’s Day Postcard to Senators (B&W, PDF)

These materials are all ready for you to print and have on hand. However, you may prefer that we send you some of the materials, like post cards.  If you would like us to mail you hard copies, please send an email by Monday, February 1st with your mailing address and the quantity you would like of each item.

We can also provide you with a copy of the film Fighting Goliath/Covenant (download the discussion guide – .doc file). The film describes the faith community’s role in halting  a dozen coal power plants slated to be built in Texas. It’s a powerful tale about how a few committed citizens can make a difference. And it’s only 40 minutes in length – perfect for a class or discussion group after services.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call your state Interfaith Power & Light leader or Bill Bradlee in the national office at (510) 444-4891.
